Irish Soda Bread (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Dry Ingredients

01 - A teaspoon of baking soda
02 - 1 teaspoon salt
03 - 4 cups plain flour, with extra for sprinkling

→ Wet Ingredients

04 - 1 3/4 cups of buttermilk

# Instructions:

01 - Set your oven to 220°C (425°F) and preheat it. Sprinkle some flour over a baking sheet or just use parchment paper to line it.
02 - Take a good-sized bowl, then mix together the salt, baking soda, and flour using a whisk.
03 - Pour the buttermilk into a hole you make in the dry mix. Use a fork to stir gently until it just comes together. You’re aiming for a soft dough that’s not overly runny or sticky.
04 - Put the dough onto a floured surface. Knead it just a little (not too much!) until it becomes a rough round shape.
05 - Place the loaf onto your prepared sheet, then use a sharp knife to slice a sizable X onto the top, about an inch deep.
06 - Bake for about 30-40 minutes in your preheated oven. Give the loaf a tap on the bottom; if it sounds kind of hollow, it’s ready!
07 - Take the bread out and leave it on a wire rack to cool down for at least 10 minutes. Cut and serve while it’s still a bit warm.

# Notes:

01 - Want a sweeter taste? Toss in 2 tablespoons of sugar with the dry mix.
02 - Dried fruit like raisins or cranberries, or even caraway seeds, are great extras you can add.
03 - No buttermilk? Mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar into 1 3/4 cups of milk and let it sit for 5 minutes before using it.
04 - Store leftovers in a sealed container, and try toasting slices to enhance the flavor.
