Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Set aside.

Mix the ground beef with pepper, salt, and onion powder. Shape into 3 patties.

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 2-3 minutes per side, then reduce heat to low and cook until fully done (160°F inside).

In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, and sugar. Set aside.

Heat another skillet on medium-low. Place buttered bread (butter-side down) in the skillet. Layer with 2 slices of cheddar, a patty, and 2 slices of provolone. Spread sauce on the unbuttered side of another slice of bread, then place it sauce-side down on top of the cheese.

Toast each side for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Repeat for all patty melts.

Serve the patty melts warm and enjoy!
